The Braxton Institute has launched "Black-Eyed Susans for Reparations," a new coalition of Maryland reparations advocates named for the vibrant and resilient state flower. This initiative is part of the ongoing Braxton Institute Dialogues on Resisting and Thriving, carefully curated for the unique context of Maryland, and anchored in the lessons learned from our Reparations for Lakeland Now! milestones.
Black-Eyed Susans for Reparations (BES) is based upon a core principle: reparations work in Maryland functions as an interconnected ecosystem rather than a singular initiative. Advancing material repair, policy transformation, and historical redress requires sustained cooperation, rigorous research, and long-term investment in collaborative structures capable of supporting diverse yet aligned efforts.
The BES coalition includes a broad cross-section of the state of Maryland and its interconnected networks, including the Central region, Capital region, Southern Maryland, Western Maryland, Eastern Shore, Cross-regional/DMV collaborations, National partners, and Statewide initiatives.
Convening this coalition is a meaningful step toward strengthening the collective capacity necessary for enduring reparative change throughout the state of Maryland.
