Braxton Institute Inaugural Newsletter

The Braxton Institute for Sustainability, Resiliency and Joy fosters physical, emotional, and spiritual sanctuary for those building a more just, joyful and sustainable world.  “In the midst of a world marked by tragedy and beauty,” we work with our partners to co-create collective strategies to repair and heal harms and traumas of historically oppressed communities and to lift up legacies of resistance and joy. When harm is done, there is a moral need for repair. Recently, we have been working with the historically Black community of Lakeland, my hometown, which taught me almost everything I know about sustainability, resiliency and joy. Unfortunately, Lakeland was decimated  by eminent domain and by policies of planned shrinkage during the 1970’s and 80’s. During this time, 105 of 150 homes were destroyed amidst the broken promises of urban renewal.
